Are we really on the cusp of another technology [r]evolution, or we are still in an exploratory phase, where not only the "rules of the game" are changing every week/day, but also where Generative AI use cases still need to prove their actual value at scale for the enterprises, as Sequoia Capital latest report suggests?
Based on IIoT + GenAI applications developments, and on several successful B2B solutions deployments [most of them still pilots, by the way...], I am confident that we are not facing another digital bubble, but still not sure about how fast this deep technology [and cultural/mindset] shift will actually happen...

๐นAmazon One is a fast, convenient, and contactless experience that enables customers to leave their wallets (and even their phones) at home.
๐นThey can instead use the palm of their hand for everyday activities like paying at a store, presenting a loyalty card, verifying their age, or entering a venue.
๐นCurrently,ย Amazon One is being rolled out to more than 500 Whole Foods Market storesย and dozens of third-party locations, including travel retailers, sports and entertainment venues, convenience stores, and grocers.
๐นAt each location, you will see a small deviceย Amazon Oneโa type of scanner that uses infrared lightโto recognize the unique lines, grooves, and ridges on your palm, and the pulsating network of veins just under the skin.

Toyota Research Institute Unveils Breakthrough in Teaching Robots New Behaviors

Today, Toyota Research Institute (TRI) announced a breakthrough generative AI approach based on Diffusion Policy to quickly and confidently teach robots new, dexterous skills.
๐นThis advancement significantly improves robot utility and is a step towards building โLarge Behavior Models (LBMs)โ for robots, analogous to the Large Language Models (LLMs) that have recently revolutionized conversational AI.
โOur research in robotics is aimed at amplifying people rather than replacing them,โ said Gill Pratt, CEO of TRI and Chief Scientist for Toyota Motor Corporation. โThis new teaching technique is both very efficient and produces very high performing behaviors, enabling robots to much more effectively amplify people in many ways.โ
๐นPrevious state-of-the-art techniques to teach robots new behaviors were slow, inconsistent, inefficient, and often limited to narrowly defined tasks performed in highly constrained environments.
๐นRoboticists needed to spend many hours writing sophisticated code and/or using numerous trial and error cycles to program behaviors.
๐นTRI has already taught robots more than 60 difficult, dexterous skills using the new approach, including pouring liquids, using tools, and manipulating deformable objects.
๐นThese achievements were realized without writing a single line of new code; the only change was supplying the robot with new data.
๐นBuilding on this success, TRI has set an ambitious target of teaching hundreds of new skills by the end of the year and 1,000 by the end of 2024.
๐นTodayโs news also highlights that robots can be taught to function in new scenarios and perform a wide range of behaviors. These skills are not limited to just โโpick and placeโ or simply picking up objects and putting them down in new locations.
๐นTRIโs robots can now interact with the world in varied and rich ways โ which will one day allow robots to support people in everyday situations and unpredictable, ever-changing environments.
Teaching Robots New Behaviors
โThe tasks that Iโm watching these robots perform are simply amazing โ even one year ago, I would not have predicted that we were close to this level of diverse dexterity,โ remarked Russ Tedrake, Vice President of Robotics Research at TRI.
Dr. Tedrake, who is also the Toyota Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Aeronautics and Astronautics, and Mechanical Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, explained,
โWhat is so exciting about this new approach is the rate and reliability with which we can add new skills. Because these skills work directly from camera images and tactile sensing, using only learned representations, they are able to perform well even on tasks that involve deformable objects, cloth, and liquids โ all of which have traditionally been extremely difficult for robots.โ

๐นAnalyzed, accessible, and shareable worldwide, these data enable researchers to observe and understand our planet like never before. Well, not all of our planet:
IoT does not connect us to seas and oceans.
๐นThis blind spot is rather striking. Water covers 72 percent of the Earthโs surface, its volumes host 80 percent of biodiversity and play a pivotal role in global phenomena, such asย climate change. It is impossible to claim a global vision without integrating the oceans.

Google DeepMind cofounder Mustafa Suleyman wants to build a chatbot that does a whole lot more than chat.
๐นIn a recent conversation I had with him, he told me that generative AI is just a phase. Whatโs next is interactive AI [ #iai ]: bots that can carry out tasks you set for them by calling on other software and other people to get stuff done.
๐นHe also calls forย robust regulationโand doesnโt think thatโll be hard to achieve.
๐นSuleyman is not the only one talking up a future filled with ever more autonomous software.
๐น But unlike most people he has a new billion-dollar company, Inflection AI, with a roster of top-tier talent plucked from Google DeepMind, Meta, and OpenAI, andโthanks to a deal with NVIDIAโone of the biggest stockpiles of specialized AI hardware in the world.
